Small Business SEO Tips: A Simple Starter Guide

The single highest-impact SEO move for most small businesses is claiming and fully filling out your Google Business Profile. It’s free, it powers the map pack, and it puts you in front of nearby customers faster than almost anything else. From there, the basics (keywords, on-page tags, reviews, and content) add up over time.

You don’t need a tech degree or a big budget to start ranking. You need to do a handful of things consistently. Here are 10 that actually matter, roughly in priority order.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

Fill in everything: categories, services, hours, photos, products. This is the engine of local search, and most of your competitors haven’t finished theirs. We have another blog going in depth on this here.

2. Get clear on your keywords

Write down the exact phrases customers use (“emergency electrician [city],” not “electrical solutions provider”). Those phrases go in your page titles, headings, and copy.

3. Fix your title tags and headings.

Every page needs one clear H1 and a title tag with your main keyword. This is low effort, high impact, and most small sites get it wrong.

4. Make sure your name, address, and phone (NAP) match everywhere.

Same format on your site, your GBP, Yelp, and Facebook. Google (and AI) rewards consistency.

5. Ask for reviews (and respond to them).

Reviews influence both rankings and whether someone picks you. Build a simple habit of asking happy customers. Oh, and responding is the nice thing to do, and Google likes to see it too.

6. Write content that answers real questions.

The questions your customers actually ask (“how much does X cost,” “do I need Y”) make great pages, and they’re exactly what Google and AI Overviews pull from.

7. Speed up your site.

Compress images and cut heavy plugins. A slow site quietly costs you rankings and conversions.

8. Make sure it works on a phone.

Most of your traffic is mobile. If your site is annoying on a phone, you’re losing people and ranking.

9. Add internal links.

Link your pages to each other naturally. It helps Google understand your site and keeps visitors moving.

10. Be patient and consistent.

SEO adds up over time. The owner who does a little every month beats the one who does a sprint and quits.

When to stop DIY-ing

You can absolutely do all of the above yourself, and we have a whole DIY marketing hub to help. But there’s a point where you’re wearing too many hats and the SEO keeps sliding to the bottom of the list. That’s when it’s worth handing it over to us, so you can get back to running your business.
